Blue Chalk worked with Pearson Education to create a series of marketing videos that highlight stories of people who have overcome various barriers to getting an education.

In so many conversations about education, one factor is overlooked—the important role a young person’s self-esteem plays in their motivation to learn.

In our second film in the series, we meet Sanah who, inspired by her mother’s struggle to get an education in Pakistan, overcame incredible barriers to pursue a dream and eventually lead others to think differently about their self-worth. This film was released by Pearson on March 8, 2018, to celebrate International Women’s Day.

We filmed this piece after we made its companion piece, “Ricardo,” and it was just as inspiring and meaningful to me. We made this with a very small crew, just me and the amazing DP Jamie Francis filmed for several days in Texas (where Sanah goes to college) and we relied on our colleague Léo Hamelin to capture Sanah’s visit to a middle school in Kentucky.

Ricardo

“Ricardo” tells the story of a young student activist who has been protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, an executive order created by President Obama in 2012. We hear about Ricardo’s harrowing border crossing as a child, his family’s sacrifices once they reunite on U.S. soil, and his anxiety around accessing higher education as an undocumented immigrant.
